Public Wireless Local Area Network

A P-WLAN enables members of the public to gain access to the Internet via a wireless network such as IEEE 802.11b and 802.11a. These networks are provided by various service providers in such places as hotels, airports, coffee shops, railway stations etc. Subscribers require a laptop computer or PDA with an appropriate wireless card and a subscription to the service provider. These subscriptions tend to either be based on the amount of data transferred or the time connected to the network. Some GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) operators are installing P-WLAN systems to augment their existing network. This enables high data capacity areas to be catered for.
